In March, she was the subject of a sudden surge in interest when it was it was announced that she would be a candidate for replace Hope Hicks as director of communication. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task in her position as the White House's strategic communications advisor. The job can be difficult because she has to work with the president who acts as the director of his communications. There are also multiple legal proceedings that could disrupt the strategy of an administration's communication and several Cabinet secretaries entangled with personal scandals. Schlapp However, she has maintained her focus on her mission. She collaborates closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and legislative teams and policy shops as well as with the overall communications team to oversee the rollout of policies. In the beginning, she has focused on school safety problems, addiction issues infrastructure, trade and drug issues. In her current position the director does not interact much with journalists. The issue came up in March when she was the subject of a sudden surge in interest, after it was it was reported that she would be an option to replace Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. The fighting has been nasty. Allies to Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is another candidate for the position, began jousting in the media. Schlapp claimed that after the Washington Examiner ran a story with negative remarks about Sayegh she had a conversation with Sayegh.
